Frequently asked questions
High Quality Laminate Flooring
Quality laminate flooring can often have the look of more expensive real wood products. Since laminate is made to look like real wood from photos of wood. Often, without an experienced eye, it can be hard to tell the tell the difference between laminate flooring and a real wood floor. Cheap laminate on the other hand, is usually be void of texture, and uses low-quality/ low resolution décor paper, making it look very artificial.
Often, when people see laminate flooring in our south Edmonton flooring showroom, they think they are seeing solid or engineered hardwood. We have heard many times “wow, that’s laminate?”
Poor Quality Laminate Flooring
Poor quality laminate flooring often has issues related to ‘gapping on the short joint’, meaning the joint between the laminate planks separate, leaving a gap between the planks. Many lower quality laminate floors require frequent ‘manual adjustments’ to keep the laminate joints closed. A strong core and quality locking systems are key components required for laminate flooring to stay together. We only sell laminate flooring with a high-pressure core, and reliable locking systems, which help keep the laminate planks from separating.
I was told not to put laminate in my kitchen, basement or bathroom…
These types of statements refer to poor quality laminate flooring sold at many discount flooring stores in Edmonton. Poor quality laminate flooring is synonymous with poor water resistance. Poor quality laminate flooring swells quickly when in contact with water because the core material is not dense and acts like a sponge, soaking up the water. This trapped water sits under the décor layer of the flooring and forms a blister or bubble. Once the core material of laminate swells from water exposure, it will very rarely recede.
Aquateck Laminate Flooring
Aquateck laminate flooring was developed and designed specifically for the needs of homes in Alberta.
Aquateck laminate flooring features a wax-infused edge that seals the locking system and core from water exposure. Instead of drawing water into the core, the wax-infused edge repels it, allowing you to wipe up spills before they damage your flooring. Additionally, Aquateck laminate flooring is protected by a high-density core created under high heat and pressure. This core is non-porous, making it very difficult for water to penetrate, even without the waxed edge. Together, these two factors protect the laminate from water exposure, making it an excellent choice for any area in your home.

FAQ
How does laminate compare to other flooring?
Why would someone use laminate flooring instead of click vinyl plank? This would be the most natural comparison to make, since both are floating floors and often have similar locking systems. Floating floors are any type of flooring that is not fastened to the subfloor beneath it. The flooring stays in place once locked together simply from the locking system and the weight of the product.
Vinyl plank flooring is often great option, depending on your needs. Vinyl plank flooring is easy to install with minimal tools. It’s also great when a waterproof floor is desired or needed, most vinyl plank flooring provides more peace of mind when it comes to spills and splashes. Vinyl plank flooring is also great for homeowners with pets that are prone to accidents, like puppies or older pets. However, keep in mind no matter how waterproof your flooring product is, the subfloor underneath can still be damaged causing the need for your flooring to be removed.
We advise our customers to not get too hung up on the “what if” of a leak or flood. Typically, major water episodes result in an insurance claim regardless of the type of flooring one has installed.
I was told not to put laminate in my kitchen, basement or bathroom, is this accuarte?
These types of statements refer to poor quality laminate flooring often sold at discount stores.
Which flooring is better, vinyl or laminate?
It’s difficult to say one is better than the other, as they both have their strengths. For example, vinyl plank flooring is waterproof and will not get damaged by water. On the other hand, laminate flooring is thicker and more forgiving over common subfloors, without requiring a large amount of prep work. Laminate flooring is more scratch resistant, while certain types of vinyl flooring can be more impact resistant. This is why it is important to discuss your needs with an experienced flooring professional. The flooring professionals at Quality Red Tag Floors will always give you our honest opinion on the best and most suitable flooring for your needs.
Will laminate flooring separate?
Separation between the short ends of laminate joints is a problem that is almost always caused by using a poor-quality laminate and/or incorrect installation. When climatized and installed correctly, quality laminate flooring will not separate.
How water resistant is the water-resistant laminate flooring you sell?
Typically, most spills are easily contained on top of the floor and do not seep under or into the core. We’ve done testing in our warehouse, and the laminate flooring we sell clearly exceeds expectations. If the spill stays on top, typically it can far exceed the 24-hour spill and splash rating that the flooring has. As a best practice, we recommend cleaning up spills immediately to avoid any water damage, regardless of the type of flooring you have.
What does laminate flooring cost?
