Engineered hardwood is the safer pick for Edmonton because our winters are bone-dry and our summers are humid. The cross-layer construction handles the moisture swings without cupping. Solid hardwood is still great on main floors with stable humidity, but we usually recommend engineered for whole-home installs.
Engineered hardwood can. Solid hardwood cannot be installed below grade because of moisture from the slab. If you want a wood look in a basement, ask us about engineered hardwood or a high-end vinyl plank.
Yes, with the right species and finish. Harder woods like white oak and hickory dent less, and modern aluminum-oxide finishes shrug off scratches. Trim pet nails and use felt pads under furniture and your floor will look new for years.
Look for a wear layer of 3 mm or more if you want the option to refinish later. Thinner wear layers (1.2 to 2 mm) are fine for a single lifetime of use but cannot be sanded down.
